Carrick Tidy Towns Gold Medal celebration

Carrick Tidy Towns Volunteers and Supporters had a celebration night before Christmas in the function room of The Landmark Hotel. (All costs of the night sponsored by Ciaran and John Kelly and staff of The Landmark).
A large group attended the event and had a very enjoyable evening. The Chairman of the committee, Donal Woods, addressed the group summarising our achievements and highlighting that the group depends totally on the goodwill of people, whether as individuals, residential communities or business owners.
Carrick won a Gold Medal for the first time in the Supervalu 2012 Tidy Towns Competition. Four Gold Medals came to Connaught - Dromod (Leitrim), Castlecoote (Roscommon) and Westport being the other achievers. Congratulations to all involved.
A big Thank You to all who worked to bring this great Gold Medal result to Carrick. To the volunteers, businesses, primary schools and residential communities of the town. Special thanks to Supervalu for being the main sponsor countrywide and to Padraig Glancy of Carrick’s Supervalu for his continued generous sponsorship.

Our thanks for great support received to Leitrim Tourism, Carrick Chamber of Commerce, the Marina Chapter of BNI, our Community Employment Scheme reps - Alan Finan and Gerry Murphy, Leitrim County Council and Roscommon County Council. A word of thanks to the local Fine Gael organisation who allowed us have their Church Gate Collection date for fundraising.
Thanks to all who have served on the Committee of Tidy Towns down through the years. Each year was a step towards this great result.
Best Kept Estate competition
launched
On the night we launched a new Annual Competition for Best Kept Estate.
A marking system will be used by an independent adjudicator and a copy of this is available to all residential estates. Get a copy now and plan ahead for 2013. Tidy Towns have worked to a 3 year plan and some improvements are required for certain areas.
While we displayed our Certificates and Medals of Achievement on the night we also had a large display of projects which we see as important to enhance the area going forward.
Those present on the night were encouraged to help the committee identify owners of derelict properties so that we can approach them for their co operation in improving the general presentation of our neighbourhood.
Carrick is looking exceptional. There is a feel good factor and the Gold Medal positively reinforces the fact that Carrick is a fantastic place to live in.
• In May 2012 Carrick was a top four finalist in Ireland’s Best Kept Town.
• In August Carrick was listed in the top 25 towns in our pitch for “The Irish Times” Best Place to Live in Ireland.
• In October Carrick was also listed in the top 25 towns as part of a National Survey organised by Retail Excellence Ireland.
Many of the best performing towns in these competitions also had competed in the Tidy Towns competition indicating that the presence of a strong community is vital if town centres are to flourish. We need to maintain this effort and the support of everyone is vital.
We have consistently improved our position in Tidy Towns, going from strength to strength - Bronze, Silver and now Gold.
As always we request that you consider volunteering. One hour per week would be great.
2013 is very important for Carrick. We celebrate “Carrick 400” and “The Gathering”. We have a Gold Medal, achieving another will not be easy. It will put demands on the same groups again - Councils, businesses, schools, sports organisations, residents’ associations and volunteers.
