Dromahair’s Kevin McGoldrick was awarded Muintir na Tíre Volunteer of the Year in Tipperary earlier this month.

78 year old Kevin McGoldrick who is chairperson of Dromahair Killargue Community Alert travelled to Basnsha in Tipperary on February 4 to receive his award which is sponsored by TASK Community Care. The award is given to a person who has “made a significant voluntary contribution to the work of Muintir na Tíre and to their community during the year.”

Kevin has been involved in Community Alert in Dromahair and surrounding areas since its formation over 20 years ago in the area. He is a regular visitor to many of the older community members living alone and also to the local nursing home. With the local committee Kevin has worked to ensure that everyone in the community is equipped with pendant alarms and security lighting. All of Kevin’s great work with Community Alert is voluntary.

Speaking to the Leitrim Observer Kevin said he was delighted with the award. He said he did not know who nominated him for the award but is very thankful to them. Kevin took up the voluntary community work almost full time after he retired as a water works caretaker with Leitrim County Council some years ago. The small farmer set up the Community Alert in his own area but said over the years he has travelled and helped people in Carrick-on-Shannon, Kiltyclogher, Rossinver and Sligo.

Accepting the award in Tipperary Kevin paid tribute to his wife Mary for her support, to Muintir na Tire, fellow committee members and the various agency and department officials that have made his contribution locally more worthwhile over the years.
