Carrick girl directs documentary on Irish emigrants

Barbara Deignan orignally from Glencarraig, Carrick-on-Shannon has directed a documentary with her boyfirend Cian McDevitt on Irish emigrants living in Toronto entitled ‘Diaspora.’

The documentary which “creates a tapestry of the Irish diaspora and subtly highlights the fears and hopes of those calling the city their new home” premiered at the Toronto Irish Film Festival on March 10 and has been picking up plenty of positive feedback in Ireland and abroad.

29 year old Barbara Deignan and her Donegal boyfriend have been living and working in Toronto, Canada for over a year, both left permanent jobs in Dublin in the pursuit of adventure. The pair had a rocky start during their first few weeks in a new city but within six weeks both secured jobs in Television. Barbara is now a Development Executive at the Guru Animation Studio in Toronto.

Although everything worked out fine for them, Barbara felt a positive documentary on life as an Irish emigrant was needed. Barbara and Cian shot a five minute documentary featuring young Irish newcomers in Toronto - they give their reasons for emigrating, their impressions of Canada and what they miss about home. The purpose of the documentary was to dispel the myth that emigration is a bad thing.
