Leitrim Ploughing Championship 2010

The much anticipated Leitrim Ploughing Championship in Carrigallen for 2010 is set to be a major event for the entire North West this Easter Saturday, April 3.

The agricultural event of the year in Leitrim starts at 1pm this Saturday on the lands of Mary Kate McDonnell, Corriga, Aughavas.

This year’s annual county ploughing championship will include the usual horse, tractor and loy digging that bring patrons back year after year. This year a special competition will be held in memory of Packie McKeever former President of Loy Na hEireann, a group fostering the ancient craft of Leitrim loy tillage. Loy digging is an integral part of the National Ploughing Championships. The winner of this competition on Saturday will be presented with a Packie McKeever Perpetual Memorial Cup.

Leitrim Pony Club will be present on the day showing off their fine stock.

As well as the main events and competitions, the Leitrim Ploughing Championship which is a great family day out will include various car boot sales, competitions such as “Guess the Weight”, Best Dressed categories and fun shows and amusements for children of all ages.

And you will certainly not go hungry on the day as there will be plenty of yummy home baked goods for sale from appletarts to toffee apples and everything else inbetween - getting your Easter foraging off to the best possible start!

There will also be plenty of raffles and fun activities for all the family on the day.

Following the Ploughing Championship the “Queen of the Plough” and the annual ploughing dance will be held in the Kilbrackan Arms, Carrigallen. Adults will be able enjoy the music by ‘The Breeze’ and compete in a waltzing and jiving competition.

All in all, this Saturday is set to be a fantastic day and night out for the entire county.

The County Leitrim Ploughing Championship commitee would like to thank all their sponsors, supporters and everyone who gets involved in the important event year after year.

Entries are still open and you can still book your place or get some more information on the event from Chairman of the Ploughing Championship Donal Cadden on: (086) 6685565.
