Leitrim’s now in... the Midlands?

It appears that Co Leitrim may just not be where we thought it was. We all went to bed last night safe and secure in the knowledge that we were firmly located in the North West, but apparently we’ve been duped. According to leading travel guide, Lonely Planet, we’ve now moved to the Midlands!

But despite the sudden change of location, there is some good news for Co Leitrim, Lonely Planet has given the county a resounding thumbs-up, describing the “delights of the unassuming county of Leitrim” as a “well-kept secret”.

“The untamed landscape and authentic rural charm are genuinely cherished by those who call it home and there’s a reluctance to let anyone or anything spoil it,” notes the guide.

The County Town gets a positive recommendation as a “lively centre” which is a “hugely popular weekend destination with a good choice of accommodation and restaurants and a great music and arts scene”.

Local cuisine also gets a well-deserved mention with Victoria Hall, The Oarsman and Vittos all highlighted for their fine food while Jamestown’s The Cottage Restaurant is also singled out for praise.

Carrick’s pubs Flynn’s Corner House, Cryan’s and the nearby Anderson’s Thatch Pub all get a mention (although Anderson’s has been stolen from Co Roscommon, if we’re being totally honest!). Caldra House, Ciuin House and Hollywell B&Bs all get the nod for accomodation, as does Lough Rynn Castle and Kilronan Castle (again in Roscommon, really Lonely Planet, what were you thinking?).

Arts, always a popular draw for the county, is highlighted with the inclusion of The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon and the Leitrim Design House. Moon River cruises also comes in for praise. But outside Carrick-on-Shannon we’re left wondering what happened to our other picturesque towns and villages in south Leitrim.

Sadly even less attention is paid to the beautiful north Leitrim area with the guide simply noting “North of Carrick-on-Shannon, the Leitrim landscape comes into its own, its rugged hills, steel-grey lakes and isolated cottages exuding a genuine rural charm.”
