Yoga is not about attempting to achieve perfect positions, it’s about caring for your body and your mind.

A popular choice of many celebrities, Yoga has also been growing in popularity locally thanks to the work of local instructor, Malo Duconte. Malo moved to the area five years ago from her native France and since then, has been running a number of classes and one-to-one sessions throughout the south Leitrim area. Malo his a teacher of the Krishnamacharya Yoga and healing foundation and his registered with the Complimentary and natural Healthcare Council as a qualified therapist, Malo is adamant that yoga can make a positive difference in any life.

As well as regular classes in the Market Yard, Carrick-on-Shannon; the Fenagh Visitors Centre; the Leitrim Association of People with Disabilities in Mohill, Malo also offers one-to-one classes in her own studio in Kilclare. One to one sessions aims to focus on the specific needs of the student, whether it’s stress relief, anxiety treatment or something more physical such as back pain.

“I concentrate more on the function of yoga and not on the form,” explains Malo. “I adapt my teaching to suit each individual

“A lot of people are afraid of yoga because they think it will be difficult but I work with people of all ages and abilities from school children to active age groups, from those who are pregnant to people who are in pain, whether that is physical or psychological.”

Malo points out that “we are all unique and Yoga teaching is about adapting to the need of each individual not the opposite”.

Simple things like working on breathing and promoting greater body awareness, such as greater awareness of posture in daily life, is essential and the benefits, says Malo, are many.

“Its about using all the tools that Yoga offers, breath, postures, sound, visualisation, meditation, to work on different level of the system, and bringing them into your life as a routine to help you cope with the challenges you face,” she says, something that has taken on even greater importance in these much more stressful times.

On July 1 Malo will be celebrating the 5th anniversary of her classes here in Co Leitrim and to mark the occasion she is running a series of classes in a studio space above the NoWDoc service offices in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Roscommon.

The classes will run at 2pm, 3pm and 4pm and all proceeds raised will go towards the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland.

For anyone interested in trying yoga, Malo also offers a one-off free one-to-one introductory class which allows her to tailor make a programme to suit your needs and abilities before going forward.

Malo also caters for groups and is already working with businesses and schools to show the benefits that can be obtained through yoga.

For further information contact Malo on (086) 3308999 or email her on maloyoga@gmail.com You can also check out details of her classes on facebook.
