Local pubs wow Sunday World Pub Spy team

Four Leitrim pubs were honoured with nearly perfect scores by the Sunday World Pub Spy team during a recent visit to the county. An Scolaire Bocht, Smyth’s and Bobby Joe’s bar in Ballinamore all scored an impress four out of five in last Sunday’s report.

An Poitin Stil, Carrick-on-Shannon was also singled out for praise with four out of five by the renowned pub rating team.

All four were praised for their well kept premises, clean toilets and excellent atmosphere. The fact that a number of the pubs also serve very tasty dinners was also highlighted by the reviewers!

An Scolaire Bocht (The Poor Scholar) was the main featured pub and it came in for high praise from the Pub Spy team who said they “stood aghast at this magnificent pub-cum-restaurant.”

They said the porter was fine at 43.65 a throw and they just loved the pub with its redbrick fireplace, solid fuel stove and shining timber floor. They said the pub was “gleaming all over and must be cleaned and polished frequently.”

Praise was also reserved for the food which they discovered is “both pleasing and inexpensive.”

The toilets were found to be “immaculate” and they could find no faults.

“Overall, we found the pub exciting and we are still trying to come to terms with the pub that has an Irish name and two non-nationals behind the counter. We found both of them exceptionally friendly, very chatty, extremely efficient, and welcoming,” the review said.

Bobby Joe’s was described as “a beautiful pub where we found a lovely lady pulling mighty pints.”
