Bringing it all back home - Monica Corish

Author Monica Corish will be bringing it all back home when she reads from her debut poetry collection, ‘Slow Mysteries’, at Bundoran Library this Saturday July 21, from 3 -5 pm.
The award-winning poet made her home in Kinlough in 2005, and joined the Bundoran Writers’ Group in 2006. A number of the poems in the collection first saw the light of day in the back room of Brennan’s Bar, at the Monday night meetings of the Bundoran Writers’ Group. The seeds of other poems were sown among The Scratching Hens, the women’s writing group which Monica led in Ballyshannon from 2007 to 2009; and still others in the Kinlough Women’s Writing Group, which resumes in September after the summer break.
At the Sligo launch of ‘Slow Mysteries’ Brian Leyden, author and former Sligo writer-in-residence, spoke of an imaginative theme in the collection “that explores what we might call visitations. But in Monica’s clever and fresh reworking of the annunciation there is no suggestion of the key or abstract but rather a rich sense of mystery and paradox and memorable detail.” In other poems, Monica’s imagination takes flight using ancestral connections and family stories - of lighthouse keepers and their wives, and immediate personal experience. As you immerse yourself in the pleasure and imagery of these poems you find it hard not to think of Monica as a lightkeeper with the lightest of touches, a beacon voice that gives light by knowing the dangers.
Monica’s collection will be introduced at the event in Bundoran Library by the Strandhill-based novelist Orfhlaith Ni Chonnail who, like Monica, is a trained Amherst Writers and Artists method writing group leader. The collection is published by the Tralee-based poetry publisher Doghouse Books, and is available direct from Doghouse Books at www.doghousebooks.ie; at A Novel Idea in Ballyshannon; Liber bookshop in Sligo; The Roundabout Gallery in Collooney; and The Reading Room and The Very Small Art Gallery in Carrick-on-Shannon.
