This Friday, August 24 sees the opening of two new solo exhibitions at the Solas Gallery in Ballinamore, “A Flask of Tea and Sandwiches” by Joan Walsh and “Captured on Canvas” by Mary Wilson.

Both these exhibitions portray the artists` admiration for the countryside, but in different media, Joan with pencil, pen and print and Mary in glowing oil paints.

This is Joan`s, (who lives in Ballinamore) 7th exhibition, including a previous one at Solas, and she says, is a “return to basics, drawing and observation with pencil, ink pen and monoprint.” She did a large series of drawings during Autumn 2011 in location around Garadice Lake and Lough Scur from which she created her “monoprints”, which are the main focus of the exhibition. As the name suggests, mono print is a method of producing one unique print by a variety of methods. Joan has been experimenting with a variety of techniques, each one requiring time and patience, the results being an eye catching and delicate display of images. Included in her exhibition will be a series of pen drawings of local houses and previously unseen older work in acrylic and oils..

Mary Wilson, who has been living in Rooskey for a long time, gives a different aspect of the Irish Countryside. Working in oils, a technique that she has mastered over the years, she emphasises the rich colours of the landscapes, the changing colours of flowing water and the ever changing moods of the sky and sea. Mary said “ It is always amazing to see such beautiful scenery as I travel around this country and to be able to capture this onto canvas is an honour indeed; I hope I have done it justice” When one looks at her paintings , she really has done the beauty of our countryside proud.

The two exhibitions will be opening at 7.30pm this Friday. They will be opened by Gail Quinn, secretary for the Ballinamore Community Arts Group. Gail’s interest in and appreciation of art and the artists contributes greatly to the Solas Gallery. The exhibitions run until September 15.
