New Maps of Ulster - History Talk

To coincide with the Dock’s Summer exhibition, The Border artist Garrett Carr will give a talk, A History of Walking in Gallery 1 of The Dock on Saturday, August 18 at 4pm, admission FREE

Garrett Carr is a writer and artist who as walked the borderline from end to end. In this talk he discusses some of the other people who have walked Ireland and written about it. Walkers like Wordsworth, Keats and the Frenchman Tocnaye, who visited Ireland in 1797 and hiked 28 miles a day in his powered wig. Garrett will discuss the impact of the Ordnance Survey and the travels of individual surveyors like JM Synge, who says he found “out-of-the-way corners in Mayo and Galway that were more strange and marvellous that anything I ever dreamed of”. Garrett will also discuss the work of contemporary writer/walkers like Tim Robinson.

Garrett is working with a Leitrim based cartographer John O Hara and installing a map on the mezzanine wall of The Dock.
