The three trad heros hav come together as part of the county’s third and final Traditional Band in Residence programme.
Seamus Begley comes from Baile ngall on the Dingle peninsula is the quintessential Irish musician with an unique style and is considered by many to be one of the finest players and singers of the music of West Kerry. Séamus divides his time between his small holding in the West Kerry Gaeltacht and travelling Ireland and the world playing music.
Born in London, fiddle and banjo player John Carty is considered one of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians. In 2003 he was awarded the coveted title of TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year firmly establishing him among the elite in traditional music. Since moving to Ireland in 1991 he has recorded extensively and performs both as a solo player, in duets notably with Matt Molloy and Brian Rooney and as part of At the Racket and super group Patrick Street.
Dónal Lunny needs no introduction having been at the cutting edge of the evolution of Irish Music for 35 years. As a founder member of Planxty, the Bothy Band and Moving Hearts he played a major part in the renaissance of traditional Irish music in the 1970s and his incredible influence can be heard to this day.
Joining as special guest for the residency will be Leitrim native and 2012 TG4 Musician of the year, Brian Rooney. Since his landmark recording ‘The Godfather’ was released in 1999 he has achieved global recognition within the traditional Irish music world. The big man with the ready smile and the lonesome sound is recognised as one of the master fiddlers of his generation.
Organised as part of Leitrim County Council’s Arts Strategy, the aim of the residency is to promote and develop traditional music in Leitrim and to celebrate and promote the rich tradition of music and song in Leitrim. The band will visit different areas in Leitrim on each of six visits over an 18 month period. They will seek to meet local musicians, hear and learn Leitrim tunes and spend time in different community settings. The residency will result in a ‘Leitrim album’ featuring the band and a host of Leitrim musicians. An important element of the ‘Leitrim Equation 3’ programme is to support musicians who wish to develop their practice and gain more knowledge in areas such as composition, recording, performance and promoting their own work.
Tickets for the first ‘Leitrim Equation 3’ Concert are on sale from The Dock, priced €15/€12, phone 071 96 50828 or on-line at www.thedock.ie.
