Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh plays intimate show at The Dock

ONE of the most instantly recognisable figures in traditional music, fiddle player, singer and front person of trad supergroup Altan, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh performs songs and music 'from the edge' at The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon on Wednesday, February 24 to celebrate the release of her first solo album 'Imeall'.

She will be joined by the great bouzouki/guitar player and record producer from 'Capercaille' Manus Lunny (brother of Donal Lunny), who co-produced her new album.

Nominated for a 2010 Meteor Award in the 'Best Folk / Traditional' category, Mairead is internationally known as one of the leading exponents of Donegal fiddle music, taking her all over the world with Altan for the past 25 years, headlining at venues such as The Hollywood Bowl, Sydney Opera House and The Royal Albert Hall. As well as her work with Altan, Mairead has presented several traditional music programmes on radio and television, including the classic radio show, "The Long Note" and the television series, "The Pure Drop" and more recently 'The Full Set' on RTE 1. She has recorded with Enya, The Chieftains, Dolly Parton, The String Sisters and many others. Her recording with The String Sisters was this year long-listed for a Grammy award.

Best known for his work with the Celtic supergroup Capercaille, Manus Lunny, brother of Donal, comes from a family steeped in musical tradition. Manus has composed music for the BBC and various American television broadcasters and was a prominent session musician on two of Ireland's most well known compilations, ist and Ceol Tacsi.vision recordings.

Mairead's limited edition first solo project, 'Imeall', which is almost sold out after only months, is an intimate collection of traditional songs and new compositions. With its unique and powerful blend of Irish traditional and European folk styles, and strong jazzy elements on many tracks that only a producer such as Manus Lunny can bring, 'Imeall' is very different from Mairad's work with Altan and from her many other collaborations.

Performing songs from 'Imeall', N Mhaonaigh's show at The Dock guarantees a mix of traditional and newly-composed gems; as Gaeilge, in English and of course fiddle instrumentals in the unique Donegal-style, making this a show not to be missed! Show starts at 8.30pm, with theatre bar open from 7.45pm. Admission is w15 and w12 and don't forget Trad Club members are entitled to concession price and other benefits – contact mdillon@leitrimcoco.ie for information on how to join. Bookings on (071) 9650828.
