‘Working.Drawing’ visual arts at The Dock

The Dock’s visual art programme for 2012 (Feb 10 - April 7) gets going with -Working.Drawing- an exhibition exploring the diverse way in which drawing is used as a navigational tool in making, doing, thinking, dressing, testing, failing, designing, playing, running and living.
Working.Drawing shows the work of 11 artists, animators, designers, filmmakers and architects each exploring the diverse and unique ways in which drawing forms an important part of their creative practice.
Berlin based artist Tinka Bechert will use fabric, photos, cardboard, architecture, floating, fragments, drawing, figuring out, and the balancing act to create a site specific wall installation.
Magnhild Opdøl is showing her beautifully observed and incredibly detailed pencil drawings. Dancer, drawer and performance artist Fergus Byrne will be Artist in Residence at The Dock for the month of February. While here he will facilitate a series of Drawing and Movement workshops. He will perform May I Draw Your Eyes during the opening of the exhibition.
London based and Roscommon raised Úna Burke is an acclaimed fashion designer, her sculptural leather pieces are worn by fashionistas such as Daphne Guinness, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga.
Leitrim living architect and designer Gordon Ryan just finished working as Production Manager for Dublin Contemporary. He found the commute on the Carrick/ Dublin line a great time for musing and drawing with his ever present Iphone.
Belfast based artist Sharon Kelly, shows a series of drawings about running: training, resting, looking at the sky (not too long!), and the various inner states an athlete carries with them as they move.
With strong Leitrim connections Cathal Gaffney CEO of Brown Bag Films and Mohill-born director Barry O’Donoghue (Barley Films) are 2 of 6 of Brown Bag’s directors whose drawings for animated films are shown. Works include Give Up Yer Aul Sins, Noddy, Octonauts, Granny O’ Grimm and Olivia. Twice Oscar-nominated Brown Bag are frequently touted as a reason to be cheerful about the future of innovation and imagination in Ireland.
The plaza of The Dock plays host to Eamon O Kane’s Panorama: I like shopping centres and shopping centres like me.
Galway-based artist Fergus Delargy was awarded the first ever PS1 scholarship to New York and he ended up staying 10 years. The works here recount the infamous Toys for Guns amnesty, where gang kids were given toys for turning in their weapons.
Scottish painter Olivia Irvine has been keeping sketch books for years. She has drawers and drawers of them now. For The Dock she has directed a short film about working and drawing in her studio in Edinburgh and elsewhere.
Film director and graphic designer Glenn Leyburn is in post production on Good Vibrations, a film about Belfast’s punk impresario Terry Hooley, due for release later this year. For The Dock Leyburn has collaged together photos, images from the web, and ephemera he has used as visual reference for his current project.
The exhibition opens at 5.30pm this Friday, February 10. Olivia Irvine, Fergus Delargy, Cathal Gaffney, Sharon Kelly, Fergus Byrne, Tinka Bechert and Gordon Ryan will all give a 5 minute taster artist talk on their work and their drawing habits during the evening. A wine reception will follow.
