‘Something Inside So Strong’ and ‘Lean On Me’ are just two of the songs that will be performed by the Sweet Spirit Gospel Choir under the direction of Tish Dunleavy at their special fundraising event in the Cornmill Theatre,

Carrigallen on Friday night, April 12 at 8.30pm.

The words of the song ‘Lean On Me’ are very relevant for the two organisations who will benefit from this special fundraiser - ‘Stop Suicide’ and ‘Leitrim Multiple Sclerosis’.

At the moment Ireland ranks 4th in the world for Suicide rates among young men between 18- 24. (IAS). 525 people took their own lives in this country in 2011. This figure is up by 7% on last year with 439 men and 86 women which shows men are more likely to take their own life than women. (CSO 2012)

Families who were bereaved by suicide founded ‘STOP Suicide’ in 2004. They are a community, voluntary body that works to prevent suicide through information, education, and promoting positive suicide prevention policies throughout the west of Ireland. Their offices are located upstairs at the Beepark Resource Centre in Manorhamilton Co. Leitrim.

Stop Suicide has qualified Counsellors who are located across Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, Cavan, Mayo, Roscommon & Galway. Funding is very important for the operation of this service and your support will be very much appreciated.

‘Stop Suicide’ Counselling can be contacted on 1850 211 877.

Multiple Sclerosis has featured a lot in the news lately with the constitutional challenge by MS sufferer Marie Fleming. Counties Leitrim and Donegal have the highest percentage of Multiple Sclerosis sufferers per head of population.

The Leitrim branch of Multiple Sclerosis is a very deserving organisation as it receives no government funding or grants and depends solely on proceeds from the annual church gate collection and fundraisers. Leitrim Multiple Sclerosis Society needs this funding to maintain their bus service, which brings sufferers to health clinics and hospitals for their appointments.

The Sweet Spirit Gospel Choir was founded in 2011 by Tish Dunleavy who is also the Musical Director & accompanist. They have performed in the Hunt Hall, The Dock Theatre Carrick-On-Shannon and St. Mary’s Church of Ireland Mohill.

The members who hail from Leitrim, Roscommon, Longford and Cavan are delighted to be associated with this special fundraiser and to know they are using their talents to help others.
