A Summer exhibition from the multi-cultural women’s group was held in the LSC, Manorhamilton in August.

The show featured a display of drawings, paintings and prints.

This project was supported by the European Union’s PEACE III Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the County Leitrim PEACE III Partnership.

The launch was attended by Sharon Timothy, Leitrim County Council Good Relations Officer and Toni Ogle from Hatch Consulting, facilitator of the Leitrim Intercultural Forum.

A lunch party, featuring foods made by the group to represent their cultural backgrounds was set up in the gallery with family members, friends and local townsfolk sitting together to enjoy the event.

The exhibition was the product of a series of workshops led by local artist Liz Byrne, that began in November 2012.

A broad range of workshops were held, starting with pieces that mapped out their different origins and drew on their existing skills, then, through classes in experimental drawing and more observational work in pencil and inky black compressed charcoal, adding colour with paint, collage and texture building.

Then moving into mono-print and lino cuts with abstract and linear imagery to make a show that reflected their diversity and wide ranging skills.

The artists in the group all live in North Leitrim and come together from many cultures.

Some of the group have a background in art and design, some have had no formal training at all but all of the women have creative talents in abundance.

The success of the project can be measured in the deep friendships that have built up within the group, a shared influence in the artworks from both the novices and trained artists, a sharing of cultures and histories, not forgetting the sharing of food which culminated in our feast.

We will continue to meet regularly and work together, to sustain our skills and socialise by drawing together.

The art group will continue to meet through the winter.

It will provide an informal art group set up providing support and space to make art.

They will meet monthly in the project space at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre.

Each month a topic is chosen by the group to explore.

No experience necessary. If you are interested in coming along bring your own materials and small fee to cover studio costs.

Next meeting dates are Monday 18th November and Monday 16th December.
