The North Leitrim Glens Walking Festival, an annual event over Easter weekend, organised by the Holey Soles Hill Walking Club will take place on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5.
There are two main hill walks each day through north Leitrim and a ramble on Sunday suitable for families. These are non-competitive events with time to take in the unspoilt scenery. All walks are led by experienced guides with local knowledge to point out the highlights along the way.
A high standard of fitness is required for the long hill walks - at around 12 - 16km taking 5 to 6 hours. Although the medium walks will be shorter (8 - 10km), taking 4 or 5 hours, they cannot be considered easy either. Some walks may involve a bit of rock scrambling, wet bogs and steep inclines. Adequate weatherproof clothing and footwear are essential and walkers must bring sufficient food and water.
The registration centre is at the Home Bar, Rossinver. All walkers must register before going on any walk. Registration opens at 9am. Walkers can choose to walk one day for €15, or both days for €25. This fee includes transport and refreshments before the walks.
After the Saturday walks there will be a meal and live music in the Home Bar. On Sunday, after the hill walks, there will be complimentary soup, and more live music in the evening.
The short ramble at Folwey’s Falls on Sunday costs only €10 and is ideal for those who like a walk and talk at a leisurely pace, Thanks to Leitrim Landscapes Guided Walks guides for facilitating this. This usually lasts for about 2 hours. Accompanied children participate for free, but this walk may not be suitable for baby buggies. The guides will provide commentaries in English and Irish on local wildlife, foraging, history and folklore.
