On Friday, Oct 2 it will be a great treat to have local artist Colleen Quinn exhibiting at the Solas Gallery, Ballinamore again. Colleen is originally from Chicago, USA where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Graphic Design. Now with her family nearly raised every exhibition of Colleens continues to show new ideas, subjects, feelings and this year something new - 3 dimensional work.
On visiting her large bright studio where she works and teaches one is overwhelmed by the array of her paintings on the walls, groups of work from her students and something quite new... beautifully modelled figures about 16” high, a product of her searching for new expressions within her art.
“Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by the traditional understanding of relationships. Painting for me is about expressing a feeling or emotion through visual means.”
This statement from Colleen brings the artist’s evocative images as seen by a young child into memories to be passed on by word and image to the next generation. Who hasn’t wondered at the miracle of a young calf or lamb, the special look of a dog waiting to play, the amazing splash of colour from autumn reeds along a path or river memories to treasure. Her figures are intriguing, one has to look closely to see the amazing detail, the lifelike poses, all carefully constructed from recycled leftover bits and pieces... photographs cannot do justice to this work, it really has to be seen to be believed.
“Through The Eyes of a Child” will be opened at 7.30pm on Friday, October 2 by the current Chairperson of Leitrim Co Co. John McCartin.
Apart from being a popular and caring local representative, John can also give a good talk, and combined with the art, an event not to miss.
