Solas Art Gallery, Ballinamore have confirmed the final details of their first two solo exhibitions of the year - “Body of Proof” by Lorna Watkins and “Enchantment” from Doug Ross,.

The exhibitions are opening on Friday, February 6 at 7.30pm.

These two artists produce work in entirely different mediums, yet have threads binding them together. Both have exhibited widely nationally and have their work in many collections.

Lorna Watkins lives in North Sligo and is originally from Kildare. Even though her background is textile design she has spent the last few years working in fine art, using a variety of techniques: drawing, painting, encaustic, photography and print.

A lot of her work is inspired by her own personal experiences, or those of others.

Pain, memories of conversations overheard, dreams remembered, form the basis for new ideas in this body of work.

Life drawing is extremely important to her; she loves the process of drawing bodies, the shapes, their internal landscapes.

Some of her work included in this exhibition consists of large unframed life drawing studies.

Doug Ross spends his time between Counties Wicklow and Leitrim when he is not exhibiting internationally.

His work is mainly photographic, in this case influenced by the Legends of the Tuatha De Dannan.

The sense that there is an energetic connection between the land and the people, that the land has a soul, what would this spirit look like in human form are all questions raised by his work.

These are images of the earth as the divine feminine -Mother Earth in many forms. Birds feature in many of the pieces, these are feminine symbols, the communal energy of Geese; the clever crow, the nurturing pelican….

Many of these pieces have been co-created with the people in them through telling personal stories and a shared sense of the wonder of the world.

Doug will also be giving a Gallery Talk on February 21 at 2.30pm on the exhibition and the making of photo-based artwork.

The exhibitions will be opened by local artist Sandra Vernon on Friday, February 6 at 7.30pm.

Sandra is well known for her support of local artists and is a keen admirer of both these artists.

The exhibitions will continue until February 28 and all are welcome to attend
