This Friday, December 14th at 2pm sees this year’s final showing of The Classic Cinema at The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon.

This Christmas themed film is the 1940 Ernst Lubitsch’s “The Shop around the Corner” starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan.

It is a comedy in very different taste from the 1998 remake, You’ve Got Mail. Lubitsch demonstrates that romantic comedies, like popcorn, can be enjoyed salty as well as sweet.

Set in Budapest this is a sharp, elegant, unsentimental picture.

Two employees at a gift shop in Budapest who can barely stand each another, have not realized that they are falling in love as anonymous correspondents through their letters.

In 1999, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The supporting cast included Joseph Schildkraut, Sara Haden, Felix Bressart, and William Tracy. The Dock is very pleased to be showing The Shop Around The Corner in conjunction with NorthWest Cinema and Access Cinema.

All tickets are €5 and this includes tea, coffee, biscuits on arrival.
