The Dock Arts Centre, Carrick-on-Shannon is delighted to host a series of events to mark the 2014 National Heritage week celebrations.

From 11am on the morning of Saturday, 23rd August until late into the evening, the centre will be a hive of activity with showcase events by locally based crafts people and musicians in addition to film screenings about various old Crafts & Customs of Ireland

The day’s events will centre on all things made by hand from furniture to music and we invite you come along, enjoy, experience & explore!

The Leitrim Design House brings you a day of hands on traditional crafts.

You can see artisans at work, witness the skill of making, meet the makers. and hear their stories.

One of those in attendance will be Charlie Perpoil who will hand make a wooden door using local timbers. Charlie has travelled for10 years around France and other European countries to master his carpentry skills with a French 12th century guild “Compagnons Du Devoir”

This is true craftsmanship in action. Drop in any time between 11am and 4pm to meet Charlie and watch him as he works. The process is completely by hand with no machinery used.

In the afternoon meet Steffi Otto from Heritage Craft Alive and explore traditional rope making. This is great fun and suitable for all ages from tots to teens to the older generation, this is a very interactive process. Join us anytime between 2pm and 4pm and try your hand at this wonderful traditional craft.

The day will celebrate in particular, the old crafts and customs of Ireland and included in the day’s activities is the screening of a Film on Old Crafts and Customs of Ireland - featuring traditional skills and trades such as Tinsmith.

The film will run in The Dock throughout the day between 11.30am and 4.30pm, alongside the live demonstration of traditional carpentry skills.

Music is such an integral part of our heritage and so heritage celebration in Leitrim would be complete without including The Leitrim musical tradition. You can explore the rich musical heritage of Leitrim in a special concert in The Dock at 8.30pm. Presented by Leitrim County Council Arts Office as part of the Leitrim Equation Residency Programme.

Many events are free and all are family friendly. You can find out more information by contacting The Dock on 0719650828.

We look forward to welcoming you.
