Ballinamore school gets green light for 2012

The long-awaited new secondary school for Ballinamore has finally been given the green light for 2012 by the Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn. The community school has been included in a list of 56 major school building projects announced earlier this week as part of a €430m education infrastructure plan.

The new school is one of nine announced at second level and will be constructed by company BAM Contractors in a Public Private Partnership.

Although it had been hoped that planning permission for the school would be granted by Leitrim County Council this month, the Leitrim Observer understands that there have been some minor issues in relation to some health and safety and access to the site and further information has been requested by planners.

However Cllr Caillian Ellis told our reporter that he had spoken with the County Manager and she had confirmed that the issues were relatively minor and she did not foresee any major problems with securing planning permission for the project early in the New Year.
