Top tips for securing your home during holiday season

The time has finally come to start making your holiday checklist! Securing your home while you are gone is just as important as packing all of your holiday essentials.

The time has finally come to start making your holiday checklist! Securing your home while you are gone is just as important as packing all of your holiday essentials.

Security expert Aaron Mooney from Action Security, the one stop security shop, has compiled a checklist that can make sure your house is safe and sound, allowing you to sit back, relax and enjoy your time away.

Avoid tell-tale signs that no one is home: Empty bins and rubbish not going out on bin day are strong indicators no one is home. Ask a neighbour to use your bins or put them out for collection. Ask a trusted key holder to take in your milk, newspaper or post deliveries. Turning off and on lights and also opening and closing blinds are ALL essential security measures.

Don’t invite them in: Large bushes or foliage around your house are a great hiding place – don’t give a potential burglar an easy entry/escape route. Whatever you do, don’t leave a key under a mat or in a plant pot (a favourite in rural Ireland!) Don’t put up on social media that you are going away. If you have previously ‘checked in’ at home then it is easy for a burglar to find out where you live. Don’t leave valuables on display. The Securikey Digital Safe from Action Security will ensure that your valuables are secure while you are away.

Intruder deterrents: Motion sensor lights are a great idea! Installing them outside your home means that if anyone comes within close proximity of your house a light will alert neighbours and passers-by that someone is there. Park up! Either leave a car in the driveway or invite a neighbour to use it while you are away.

Lock up: Make sure all your windows, doors and other access points are locked up tight before you leave. Investing in good, solid locks such as the CISA Anti-Snap Cylinder from Action Security can decrease the likelihood of your home being burgled significantly. Individual window locks are important. Even if the intruder breaks the window’s own lock, they have extra security with a lock on the inside that can’t be reached. Action Security have a great range of window locks that will ensure your home is secure. Sliding glass doors are a common break-in point for intruders. Aaron Mooney from Action Security recommends installing locks such as the ERA Multi-Bolt. These prevent an intruder being able to force open your double doors and therefore are unable to enter through them.

Statistics don’t lie: It has been reported that these days, one out of every four crimes committed in Ireland is burglary. ‘This shocking statistic really hammers home the need to up your domestic security, now more than ever!’ comments Aaron Mooney from Action Security. The number of reported burglaries in Ireland has risen year on year for the past five years. This figure reached 27,774 in 2012, this highest it has been in nearly ten years! Don’t become a number; ensure your home is secured today.
