With a 100% Planting grant, 20 year tax-free premiums and retention of the Single Payment there has never been a better time for Co Leitrim farmers to boost their income by planting forestry says Teagasc’s local Forestry Development Officers.
Forestry is a financially attractive, practical and secure option for farmers looking to boost income, grow timber and provide a solid long term investment. An Afforestation (planting) grant is available to farmers and land-owners to plant and maintain a plantation for the first four years.
The grant ranges up to €5500 per hectare, depending on the type of tree to be planted and will cover 100% of the cost of planting and maintenance for four years in most cases.
In addition farmers* can also receive an annual tax-free premium of €427 per hectare (€173 per acre) for 20 years for a typical conifer site and higher if suitable for broadleaf trees such as Oak, Ash and Alder.
There’s more good news for farmers with entitlements planting in 2012/13 because they will be able to draw their Single Payment* on the planted land.
To apply for an Afforestation grant you will need to contact a Registered forester. These are professional foresters registered with the Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine who will prepare and submit the application on your behalf.
A list of registered foresters is available from Forest Service, Wexford 1890 200509 or on the Teagasc forestry website www.teagasc.ie/forestry.
The planting season will start in November – so taking the usual administrative delays into account you should start planning your application now so that you will have Afforestation grant approval in good time.
