Senator Michael Comiskey, Seanad spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and the Marine has welcomed recent announcements from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine of payments totalling €9m under the three Discussion Group Programmes which will begin issuing to successful participants in the coming days.

In a separate announcement Minister Coveney has agreed that there will be maximum flexibility on educational requirements for young farmers.

“Like the Minister, I am very pleased to see that the Discussion Group payments are issuing to the participating farmers. The benefits of these Programmes in ensuring the uptake of new technology and the adoption of best commercial practice was highlighted in Food Harvest 2020 and so I am delighted to see the high levels of participation in the various sectors,” said Senator Comiskey.

“ The programmes have attracted considerable interest from across the country. I also welcome the fact that the individual payment rates are being maintained at 2013 rates as follows: Dairy Cash Plan, €1,000, Sheep, €825, and Beef, €825,” he told the Leitrim Observer this week.
