Call for fodder taskforce
IFA Deputy President Eddie Downey has called on Teagasc to urgently set up a task force to help farmers deal with the potentially serious fodder crisis that is emerging on many farms following on from the unusually high levels of rainfall over the last two months.
Mr Downey said, “Many livestock farmers are facing a serious fodder shortfall this winter as they had to graze silage ground as grass ran scarce. Extreme weather conditions of late have seen many soils reach field capacity and the occurrence of widespread spot flooding. Under these circumstances, it has been impossible to achieve good grass utilisation and as a result many farmers had no option but to graze silage ground. With meal prices continuing to spiral upwards Teagasc must set up a task force immediately to help farmers formulate plans to address and deal cost effectively with the emerging fodder shortfall.”
