Colreavy calls on Minister to take action

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Deputy Michael Colreavy, has called on Minister Simon Coveney to prepare for the expected fall in silage harvest due to heavy rainfall.

Deputy Colreavy said: “The month of June has been the wettest on record. This has seriously hampered farmers’ ability to harvest silage for the Winter. Coupled with that, many farmers have been forced to re-house their herds because of land being waterlogged.

“This puts pressure on any remaining silage that farmers may have had since last winter. The bad weather has also had a significant effect on milk yields which puts further financial pressure on dairy farmers.

“Minister Simon Coveney must take measures to ensure that farmers do not take a big financial hit because of the bad weather. The Minister should consider an advance Single Farm Payment which would help alleviate the financial pressure that farmers are now under. If the bad weather continues into the summer, Minister Coveney must take action to ensure there are sufficient supplies of animal feed for the Winter.”
