Irish famers optimistic about industry’s future

The Irish farming community has expressed its optimism in relation to employment in the sector over the next three years, according to the results of a survey undertaken at the recent Ploughing Championships in New Ross.

Of 300 farmers questioned at the event, 57% believe that employment in the farming sector will increase, with only 23% believing there will be a decline. The majority of those who see an increase believed it would be between 5 and 10% with some believing growth greater than 20% is possible over the next 3 years.

The survey, commissioned by Ecocem, the durable farm cement manufacturer, also revealed a major increase in environmental awareness amongst the Irish farming community. Of those surveyed, 72% said that they now always consider the environmental impact of products that they are purchasing with 85% agreeing that climate change is having a major effect on farming in Ireland.

Commenting on the results David O’ Flynn, Business Development Manager at Ecocem said “The aim of our survey was to determine farmers’ attitudes to the greater choice of environmental products on the market today and to gauge their outlook on the future of the industry. It was extremely uplifting to see the positivity by the majority of those surveyed and the belief that the sector will continue to grow. The importance of the farmers in supporting the wider community is clearly evident with more than 90% of participants proposing to invest in their business over the next 3 years.”
