Two Ballinamore writers will be published in a new book ‘Tuesdays at Charlies’ a collection of short stories and poetry by Fermanagh Creative Writing Group.
Angela McCabe and Cait Vallely are both included in this anthology about places and people of the region, which will be launched in the Ardhowen Threatre, Enniskillen on May 24 (Keith Baker, author and journalist will launch the book) and in Ballinamore during the Cross Border Reader’s Emporium August 2-4.
Angela is an accomplished poet and is also a practitioner at the Natural Healing Centre in Ballinamore, she runs the La Nua Ballinamore Book Club and the John McGahern Readers group and is involved in the John McGahern Festival being held this month. Her poems in the new book are focused on Leitrim and her native Tyrone and include pieces on Sliabh an Iarainn mountain and local characters.
Cait moved to the area after returning from many years abroad, living in Spain. She writes short stories and is also working on her first novel.
The pieces in the book are as diverse as their writers: funny, moving, reflective, satiric and thought-provoking. There are tales about breaking into Enniskillen mortuary, meeting the Krays, halcyon Tempo days, a Titanic surprise, the Spirit of Christmas, how to lose a yo-yo contest - and cookies, crows, corpses, cross-dressers, Canada and cowboys.
The Fermanagh Creative Writing Group has members from all over the country.
As well as the Fermanagh book launch, the collection will be launched locally during the Cross Border Readers Emporium in Ballinamore in August. This massive emporium will include book clubs from Ballinamore, Mohill, Carrick-on-Shannon, Kiltyclother, Manorhamilton, Carrigallen as well as clubs in Fermanagh, Cavan and Tyrone, coming together to hear from Irish authors and discuss books. Authors announced to speak at the emporium include DBC Pierre, Susan McKay, Pauric O’Reilly, Kevin Barry and more. Well known Irish Author Belinda McKeon will speak about her book ‘Solas’ in Ballinamore Library on July 17 at 8pm.
Books are passed between Leitrim book clubs and across the border as part of the network. The book clubs meet approx once a month. Anyone who wants to get involved should call their local library for details of local clubs or Angela on (071 964423) who runs the La Nua and John McGahern book clubs.
