U-14 13-A-SIDE LEAGUE FINAL

ALLEN GAELS 5-11

LEITRIM GAELS 4-8

The high score-line may indiciate a free-flowing encounter but last Monday’s Final between two neighbours was far from that as both sides gave away a litany of frees throughout the 60 minutes in what is quite unusual for this age of football.

Allen Gaels Wayne Reynolds scored three points from placed balls and Leitrim Gaels Shaun Chandler 1-5 but it was the figure of Ciaran Walsh that proved the greatest difference betweeen the teams, his ability to get scores from play that saw the Drumshanbo youngsters home.

Walsh ended up with 3-3 but in truth, most of Drumshanbo’s scores came from the light corner-forward and his poaching ability and speed gave the Leitrim Gaels rearguard all sorts of problems.

At times, it looked as if Walsh was going to lead the Drumshanbo lads to a very easy win but Leitrim Gaels kept battling and battling, even leading by two points midway through the second half. But they just couldn’t stop Walsh and the Allen Gaels sharpshooter scored two goals in the space of as many minutes to seal the victory.

Given that Leitrim Gaels had suffered a 5-13 to 3-3 loss in the round robin encounter, this game was a far tighter affair as their non-stop work-rate and intense commitment made it hard for the stronger Allen Gaels to pull away.

Ciaran Walsh was the star of the show for Allen Gaels but he got great support from Jack Ozdobinski, the impressive Wayne Reynolds, Caleb Duffy, Alan McTigue and Ryan Crawford while Andrew Guckian, Shaun Chandler, Shane Rogerson and Blake Walsh were best for Leitrim Gaels.
