Leitrim manager Mickey Moran has told the Leitrim Observer that he had no option but drop Wayne McKeon from the County Senior panel after breaches of the team’s disciplinary code of conduct and Player’s Charter.

Asked if the loss of the Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s clubman, voted Man of the Match after the victory over Sligo in May, was a significant blow to Leitrim’s chances against Down, Moran said “Lets me say this now, Wayne McKeon put himself in a position that he had to be told to leave the panel. Wayne McKeon was dropped off the panel.
“It has been sorted out in-house, disciplinary reasons and that is all I’m going to say about it but he was dropped, not left the panel,” said Moran in a reference to the story in last week’s Leitrim Observer.
Although he refused to go into detail about the breaches of the Players Charter, the Leitrim manager added “We have high standards, the lads signed up to a Players charter which they drew up and unfortunately, this individual couldn’t live up to those and there was no option but to drop him.
“I want to make that quite clear because at the end of the day, when I hear that he has left the panel, that is not true.”
Moran stressed that the decision was made in order to be fair to the other players on the panel – “We have to be fair to all the people on the panel who give 100% commitment and we made that decision because we could not look the other boys in the face.
“And that will be the same for anybody who does not live up to the standards we set in terms of commitment, sacrifice, discipline and whatever.
“Let’s put it like this here, our lads sacrifice for a whole year, their social lives put on hold, their whole family life, their work has to come around that and you cannot justify to any lad leaving him off the 15, leaving off the 26, or leaving him off the panel if somebody else is not committing, you can’t pick that person, you can’t have people dictating their level of commitment.
“So for the best interests of the team and the squad, the decision was made that Wayne McKeon is dropped.”
