Horan impressed by Leitrim’s work ethic

It may have been their first game of the year and some of the players may have been feeling the effects of the flight home from Miami after a team holiday but Mayo manager James Horan was not making excuses after his side slumped to a one point defeat in Ballinamore on Sunday last.

It may have been their first game of the year and some of the players may have been feeling the effects of the flight home from Miami after a team holiday but Mayo manager James Horan was not making excuses after his side slumped to a one point defeat in Ballinamore on Sunday last.

Reflecting on his side’s first half performance James said, “There were some things in the second half of the first half that were quite good. It took us a while to stretch the legs and get going but I’ll tell you what was disappointing, I was disappointed with the work rate and we had a chat about that and we’ll look to address that very quickly.”

The failure to begin the second half as they finished the first half was an issue James addressed but he was full of praise for a Leitrim team who he felt simply worked harder than his own team.

“That was disappointing, we thought we’d be able to kick on a little bit but fair play to Leitrim they were very competitive and worked extremely hard, they outworked us today and that was the basis of their victory. That’s two one point wins for them in the FBD so they’ll be very happy with that and they’ll be looking to build on that I’m sure.”
