Inaccuracy derails Leitrim’s promotion dream

Inaccuracy has been the bane of Leitrim teams for many a year but it was never more costly than last Sunday when the County Senior footballers suffered a devastating one point loss to Longford in the sixth game of the Allianz League Division 4 in Pearse Park, Longford.

Leitrim 0-10

Longford 1-8

Chasing the home side midway through the first half after Paul Barden’s audaciously executed goal, Leitrim were left ruing seven first half wides as they dominated possession but failed to turn them into scores.

The result may not yet be mathematically confirmed but the one point loss ends Leitrim’s hopes of promotion from Division 4, even with two games to come. Leitrim can only end on ten points and with Longford, Wicklow and Carlow all having the advantage of a win over Mickey Moran’s side for any potential tie-break, it means that the Green & Gold will spend the 2012 National League season in Division 4.

A point would have kept the promotion dream alive but the margins between success and failure in Division 4 are no more than a finger-tip, the finger-tips of full-back Barry Gilleran who got a vital touch on Adrian Croal’s over-head kick in the dying seconds of normal time.

Or what about Longford’s goal and Brian Kavanagh’s solitary point at the start of the contest, both coming as a result of mis-placed short kick-outs that cost Leitrim 1-1 in a game where a a matter of inches separated the sides.

No more than Mickey Moran acknowledged when Fermanagh missed a late free against Leitrim just two weeks ago that would have drawn the game in Pairc Sean, lady luck is a fickle mistress.
