The Leitrim U-21 team under the newly appointed managerial team of Benny Guckian, Padraig Kenny and James Holohan began their Hastings Campaign on Saturday last with a defeat at the hands of Longford in Keenan Park, Ardagh.
Against a team which was backboned by several of the side that reached last year’s Leinster Final, Leitrim trailed by just a solitary point until the closing stages of the first half when Mark Hughes struck for a well taken Longford goal.
Leitrim struggled in the early stages of the game and appeared to be in serious trouble when Longford stormed 0-4 to 0-0 ahead after only nine minutes, a brace of points coming from Robbie Smyth (free and play) while Darren Gallagher and Padraig McCormack also shot over the bar.
But Leitrim finally got their act together and after failing to convert a handy free, their opening score materialised in the 14th minute when midfielder Shane Moran was on target and then full-forward Conor Beirne landed a well struck long range point in the 20th minute.
