Shane Barry Memorial Tournament: This very popular annual event in its 13th year proved to be a great success with an historic victory for Dromahair’s young Keith Conlon.
Keith, son of John and Barbara celebrates his sixteenth birthday on 21st of this month and is set to make history for the LPA to be the youngest person to receive the award. In the path to the final, Keith defeated Darin Philips 3-2, Paul Christie 3-0 and Jamie Gaffney 3-2 in a ding-dong battle between the two Juniors.
The finalist Niall Sweeney had a tough draw defeating C. Walsh 3-0 in the prems last year. Last year’s champion Colin Crossan 3-1. An off-form Hugh Kielty 3-0 and John McKenna 4-1 in the semi final. The final between Niall and Keith proved to be one of the best in the history of the event. In the race to 5 frames, Niall won the first, Keith the second to make it 1 all. Keith won the third with Niall to draw at 2 all.
Niall took over winning the fifth and sixth to bring the score to four, two in Niall’s favour. Keith stood firm to take the 7th and 8th and 9th frame for a very historic victory. Keith follows in the footsteps of fellow Dromahair man the great Shane O’Hara who won in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
