The Leitrim AAI Primary Schools Cross Country and Walks Championships drew over two hundred competitors from nine to the Leitrim Gaels Community Field on Wednesday last.

While the number of schools could have been larger the number of actual competitors compared favourably on a population ratio basis to that in neighbouring counties.

There was some first class competition in all events with team and individual positions contested with great enthusiasm.

Ella McDaid of Drumlease was a very impressive winner of the junior girls race while Alannah McGuinness of St Manchan’s stamped her class on the senior event. Jordan Reynolds of St Manachan’s used his experience to win the Senior Boys race while St Clare’s runner Patrick Montgomery produced fine form to win the Junior boys race on his first outing at this level.

The venue was excellent and the competition was run off to time. Weather conditions were favourable and the runners made light of facing a fairly stiff breeze in the finishing straight.

The prizes were presented by Patricia Griffin, Chairperson of Leitrim County Board AAI. The first three teams and eight individuals in each of the six competitions qualify to represent Leitrim in the Connacht Championships in Calry, Sligo, on Saturday week.
