It may be only be a matter of weeks since the end of the 2015 All-Ireland Football Championship but already attention is being switched towards next summer.

That became particularly true last Thursday evening when the draws were made for the Provincial Football Championships and local supporters are sure to be out in force for a home fixture against either New York or local rivals Roscommon in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.

Roscommon will be widely expected to see off the challenge of New York in Gaelic Park and would then face the relatively short journey to Pairc Sean MacDiarmada for a clash with Shane Ward’s Leitrim.

The prospect of facing Roscommon, under the new management team of Fergal O’Donnell and Kevin McStay may be a daunting one, but the reward for the winners will be a semi-final encounter with Sligo. It may be some time away but Shane Ward and his team will no doubt be carefully plotting how best to cause a potential upset over the coming months.
