Leitrim GAA’s greatest ever player will be honoured at this year’s Leitrim Sports Star Awards after it was announced that Packy McGarty will receive the 2015 Hall of Fame Award.

The 2015 Leitrim Sports Star Awards, organised by the Leitrim Sports Partnership, will take place on Saturday, November 28, in the Lough Rynn Castle Hotel and will see the county’s outstanding sporting achievements honoured over 10 different categories.

Sports covered included gaelic football, athletics, weight lifting, cycling, boxing, swimming, hurling, golf and ultra-running.

The presence of Leitrim and Mohill legend McGarty is sure to make the Sports Star Awards a special occasion as the list of McGarty’s achievements is simply incredible. A true icon of Leitrim sport, McGarty was the only Leitrim player on the Connacht Team of the Millennium.

Packy also received the highest vote by far in the Leitrim GAA Team of the Millennium and was nominated in two positions for the All-Ireland Team of the Millennium and is often regarded as one of the greatest players never to win an All-Ireland, his fame stretching well beyond Leitrim’s borders.

His Leitrim career spanned four decades and Packy was the star of the Leitrim team that contested four Connacht Finals in a row between 1958 and 1961 and his performance in the 1958 Final is regarded as one of the greatest individual displays ever in a Connacht Final.

Tickets for the Leitrim Sports Star Awards are available, costing €35, online at www.leitrimsports.ie or by calling Leitrim Sports Partnership on 071 9650498 or emailing us on sports@leitrimcoco.ie.
