Amazing come-back seals historic first “A” title for Allen Gaels

Despite trailing by five points midway through the first half, Allen Gaels staged a remarkable come-back to win their first ever Ladies ‘A’ title last Monday evening in Ballinamore when they shocked favourites Mohill to win the Annaduff Credit Union U-14 Ladies 11-a-side title.

A rampant Mohill looked as if they were going to obliterate the Drumshanbo girls for a second time in less than a month following on St. Manchan’s victory in the Primary Schools final when they hit five points without reply in the opening nine minutes.

But Allen Gaels somehow managed to keep in the game and led by an inspirational Catherine Gilmartin and Nicole McGarry in defence, the Drumshanbo girls managed to hold out and grow in confidence as the half progressed.

With Allen Gaels starting to dominate the second half, it wasn’t until Heather Moore unleashed a magnificent shot six minutes from halftime to the back of the Mohill net that they finally took the lead.

Mohill, true to their nature, fought back and it took a tremendously brave block by Catherine Gilmartin some four into injury time to deny them a late goal that might have snatched them victory, the force of the shot almost knocking the defender out!

Mohill must have wondered what might have been had County Under 14 star Dearbhaile Beirne, who is not affiliated with any club, been available to them last Monday as she was the key player in the Schools Final.

Mohill did have a lot of chances in the second half but the accuracy they displayed in the first ten minutes had deserted them.

County U-14 players Caoimhe Canning and Aisling McNabola impressed for Mohill as did Odharnait McGuinness and Clodagh Mitchell while the loss of Emma Quinn with injury at halftime did not help their cause.
