After suffering defeats at the hands of Sligo three times this year, Leitrim turned the tables in spectacular fashion last Sunday in Castlebar to retain the TG4 Connacht Intermediate Championship title.

In an epic encounter, Leitrim raced into a 0-8 to 0-2 lead in Elvery’s McHale Park but saw Sligo hit back to draw level approaching halftime before Player of the Match Dearbhaile Beirne scored 1-1 to hand the advantage back to the Green & Gold.

And in a tense second half, Leitrim kept their noses in front under huge Sligo pressure with Michelle Guckian emerging the hero as she made a fantastic save late in the game to deny the Yeatswomen a goal that would have given them the title.

A delighted Leitrim manager Pat Costello said “I’m absolutely thrilled and the manner in which we won, we had to fight to the death for it, it was there for anyone to take it and I think we showed more hunger and more desire.”

Captain Sarah McLoughlin said that stopping Sligo’s run of success against Leitrim during 2015 added to the joy of victory last Sunday - “It actually means so much more this year, I don’t know if that is hard to believe but I genuinely was crying tears of joy because they beat us three times this year.
