A plucky Aughavas side grabbed a late minimum margin win over Glencar/Manor in Sunday’s competitive GWP Intermediate Championship Group 1 game in St. Hugh’s Park Ballinaglera where Colin McKiernan shot a 58th minute point that secured victory for the south Leitrim men.

With six minutes to go, Glencar/Manor enjoyed a three point advantage and had led this showdown from the 35th minute but Aughavas turned the tables on Manor when Kevin Keegan flicked to the net in the 57th minute to make it level pegging. Within sixty seconds, McKiernan fired over to secure victory for Aughavas.

Aughavas was up for the battle right from the start and took the lead within 30 seconds of the throw-in when the lively David Charles whipped over a point. Alan Hickey replied with a Glencar/Manor point from play two minutes later to make it a stalemate situation.

David Charles was proving to be a handful for Glencar/Manor full-back Michael Poniard at this stage and when keeper Shane Sweeney spilled a ball in the fifth minute, Charles had the ball in the net in a flash.

But over the next five minutes, Glencar/Manor managed to close the deficit after Ronan Flynn put over a free and Niall Brady fisted over a point.

Aughavas struck for another goal on the 12 minute mark when Kevin Keegan finished to the net from close range after a David Charles pass. Niall Brady replied with a point almost immediately.

Alan Sweeney with two points kept Manor in touch with scores from Paul Bohan and david Charles but Aughavas stretched their lead with a Charles free on 27 minutews and a Kieran Moran point from play two minutes later.

However before the interval Glencar/Manor were brought right back into contention when Killian Kerrigan finished to the net after being put through by Killian McGriskin leaving the north Leitrim side trailing by just 2-5 to 1-6 at the interval.

The Aughavas lead was increased within three minutes of the restart when Kevin Keegan hit a point from a paced ball but Niall Brady hit back in style with 1-1, the goal coming after a Ronan Flynn pass to give Glencar/Manor the lead for the first time in the game.

Kevin Keegan and Sweeney swapped frees but the north Leitrim men went three clear after another Sweeney free and a Patrick McEneaney point from play.

Aughavas hadn’t scored for 17 minutes and had been slipping out of contention but that all started to change when Kevin Keegan tapped over a 20th minute free. Glencar/Manor had a let off two minutes later when keeper Shane Sweeney brought off a good save to deny a Colin McKiernan goal chance.

Two Sweeney points in reply to one from John Conefrey left Glencar/Manor three clear but almost immediately Aughavas got back on level terms after Niall Maguire drove a ball from midfield into the Glencar/Manor goalmouth where Kevin Keegan was on had to flick the ball past keeper Sweeney.

Within the space of a minute Aughavas grabbed a dramatic victory when Colin McKiernan shot over. Glencar/Manor had a chance to force a draw had not Niall Brady shot wide following being put through by an Alan Sweeney hit free while after that David Charles shot an Aughavas wide at the other before the finish.
