Bornacoola exited the Connacht Intermediate championship at the first hurdle on Saturday afternoon in Charlestown as a Louise Brett inspired CT Gaels from Sligo earned a deserved semi final date with the Mayo Champions.

Despite the final score line, Bornacoola contested the game quite well throughout as the Gaels, an amalgamation of Cloonacool and Tubbercurry, built on a dream start to put the game out of the Bors reach by half time. Indeed it was the ability of the Sligo girls to make the most of their chances that earned them the win on the day.

With almost the first attack of the game Susan Shanley made a brilliant save to deny the Gaels a goal but the rebound fell kindly for Aisling McTiernan who made no mistake. Louise Brett pointed five minutes later as Bornacoola struggled to find accuracy in front of goal.

Midway through the half Leonie Duffy got Bornacoola off the mark with an excellent point from play. However the game was won by the Sligo women in the next 15 minutes as they scored 3-1 without reply.

Bornacoola had three excellent goal chances themselves but could not convert them mainly due to some excellent goalkeeping by Laura McIntyre and a shot that hit the post.

In the second half both teams enjoyed plenty of possession. Bornacoola finally began to find their range with two points from Kelly Howard, one from a free. Bornacoola continued to look for that elusive goal and were thwarted yet again by an excellent save from McIntyre.

Unfortunately it was CT Gaels that found the net with a goal from Anita O’Hara midway through the half but that was to be their final score of the game.

Bornacoola dominated the final quarter and added three points from a Kelly Howard free and two from play from Leonie Duffy as the Gaels defended their goal to deny the Leitrim champions any three pointers.

Despite the defeat, the Bornacoola girls will be very happy with their seasons work as they move to Senior status in 2013.
