Captain Emlyn Mulligan defended the Leitrim players who saw action against Down and praised their commitment despite what all acknowledged was a lost cause.

“It is just disheartening coming up here, I suppose it was inevitable what the outcome was going to be,” said Emlyn, “We put ourselves out there to take that and we have to take the criticism with it but the boys did their best.

“I couldn’t say a bad thing about any man who played there today, he came out and he put everything into Leitrim for the six weeks since the Roscommon game and that has to be admired, regardless of the result we got here today.

“We have the boys out there, they’re not the problem, it is other boys we need to get on board and give the commitment. It is what it is, we’ll move on and regroup and see what the future holds.

“Obviously it is disappointing today, nobody likes to come off a 20 odd point defeat, no more than last year. That was the one thing we didn’t want to happen but from watching it yourself, Down blew us out of the water.”
