Ahead of next Wednesday’s Connacht U-21 Championship quarter final against Mayo, Leitrim manager Shane Ward took a moment to give his thoughts on the game and how preparations for the big match are progressing.

“Preparations are going really well. We trained yesterday (Saturday) morning and we trained this morning (Sunday) and have been doing that for quite a number of weeks. Apart from a couple of colds and flus which is par for the course we’re going well. We have no injury worries looking into the game.”

Although there are new faces in this year’s team Shane is happy with how the panel has gelled and is relishing the prospect of a Championship game in McHale Park.

“We have a couple of boys carried in from last year’s team so they understand the way we operate and we have a couple of newcomers from the minor squad last year and they have given us great impetus, pace and power going forward and we are lucky to have them. We have a good squad and they’re gelling together well.

“I know it’s a nice comfort to be at home but that’s all it is. We’ll be very much looking forward to going to Castlebar, playing on a good pitch, under lights on the Wednesday night. I think for any 20 year old there is no better place to be in the country at that time. The boys will be looking forward to that, looking forward to the venue and looking forward to the hype going into the game and they are looking forward to the challenge.
