Collaboration between Manorhamilton school, Fab Lab and the Leitrim Sculpture Centre

Fab Lab Manorhamilton and the Leitrim Sculpture Centre collaborated recently with Gaelscoil Chluainín on a school art project.

A series of design and making workshops were held with the children from the 6th Class in the Gaelscoil. The aim was to create an outdoor art installation that would be unveiled at their graduation day celebrations and would serve as a parting legacy of their time at the school. The children all contributed ideas to the project and then visited the Fab Lab and Leitrim Sculpture Centre to create their group and individual artwork.

At the Fab Lab the children used a 3D Scanner to scan their heads and create digital busts which were then 3D printed. These 3D prints were taken to the Leitrim Sculpture Centre and used to create moulds from which solid metal replicas were crafted. The children also used digital design software to create Pop Art style images of themselves from digital photographs. The two tone images were then cut out in brightly coloured vinyl and carefully stuck onto laser cut acrylic to create a large collage of their individual images.

The children were kindly donated the facilities at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre to create individual mosaics using recycled tiles and a group collage in the shape of a guitar using worn out sports equipment with help and guidance from local artists and crafts people.

The project was a huge success with the hope that it will be continued over the coming years by the departing 6th class students building upon and adding to the new installation.
