In this special centenary year in Kiltyclogher it was with great sadness on last Thursday that the community heard of the death of their oldest resident, Mrs. Bridie McSharry, in her 104th year.
Bridie McSharry, nee Gilgunn, was born on the 18th November 1912 in Tulleskearney, Rossinver, Co. Leitrim.
She was the last surviving member of a family of eight, two of whom also reached their 103rd birthdays.
She is survived by her four daughters, Anna Dooley, Portlaoise; Teresa Mohan, Rathoath; Patricia McCorry, Blacklion and Kathleen McCaffrey, Kiltyclogher.
She has 18 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Her only son, Peadar, died in a tragic accident in Australia in 1973.
Bridie enjoyed very good health and was able to stay in her own home until last December when she was admitted to Our Lady’s Hospital, Manorhamilton where she remained until her death.
In his sermon Fr. Pat Farrelly outlined the many great events Bridie had lived through starting with the sinking of the Titanic in the year of her birth, the 1916 Rising and two great World Wars. She died peacefully on Thursday 14th July 2016 surrounded by her family.
