Carrick-on-Shannon dentist crowned Connacht winner

Dr. Peter Doyle, Summerhill Dental, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim is Connacht Regional Winner of the ‘Sensodyne Sensitive Dentist of the Year Awards 2016’.

The awards, held in the RDS Concert Hall in Dublin on Saturday night, invite patients to nominate their dentist if they believe they have gone above and beyond normal patient care in treating patients .

Dr. Doyle was nominated by his patient Louise Sharpe who was hit by a bottle thrown from a moving car while out running receiving severe lacerations, bruising and major damage to her front teeth as a result of the incident.   As well as spending a number of hours fixing her smile on the day of the incident, Dr. Doyle put a treatment programme in place to ensure the ongoing damage was monitored.   The patient said “there are no words for the decency and compassion shown by Dr. Doyle that morning.”  In a final gesture of goodwill Dr. Doyle did not charge the patient for the dental work.

In choosing Dr. Doyle as the Connacht winner the judging panel cited the fact that “the level of care, consideration and support offered to the patient was outstanding”.

Dr. Doyle said, “It is a great honour to receive this award and it is all the more meaningful given that it was a patient who proposed the nomination.   When an episode like this happens it can be very traumatic for the patient and it is important that our patients have trust in us to fix their smile and deliver the best possible treatment.    These awards highlight the importance of the dentist/patient relationship where the patient is at the centre of everything we do.”
