The Ballinamore Festival 10K and 5K Roadraces which are supported this year by Waterways Ireland will take place this Wednesday evening at 7.30.

The Ballinamore Festival 10K and 5K Roadraces which are supported this year by Waterways Ireland will take place this Wednesday evening at 7.30.

For those not already entered this can be done this evening from 6.00 p.m. at Ballinamore Sportshall where all competitors whether pre entered or not must register and receive their numbers as early as possible before start time.

Both races will start at the same location, the bottlebank beside the Sean O Heslin GAA Park, at 7.30 with chip timing provided as last year by championchip Ireland. Both 10K and 5K will start simultaneously and proceed through the town with them dividing at Supervalu. Here the 10K turns right up along the Canal by the Golf Course to join the Carrick on Shannon road and return to Ballinamore with the finish at Mean Scoil Fatima.

The 5K will go directly out the Carrick-on-Shannon road and turn short of Beirnes’ Garage to return and finish at the same location.

The 10K is open to athletes of eighteen and over in accordance with AAI Rules and there will be prizes for the first six individuals as well as three for juniors and each of the Masters Categories. There will also be three Team Prizes for each men and women and a special prize if the winner breaks the course record. The 5K is open to serious runners, joggers and fun runners/walkers with numerous spot prizes in addition to winners, Under 18s and Under 16s.

The first race in 2010 was blessed with fine weather. Last year was the opposite with a very wet day although it cleared for a while approaching the races. The indications from the forecasters this year is that it will be like last year when some Festival street activities had to be postponed. However, the races will go ahead regardless of weather as athletes do not mind getting wet.

If it is wet, however,it may be necessary as last year to postpone to a later date the Under 8,10,12 and 14 races which will be held on the grass in St Felim’s at 6.00 to cater for younger athletes and visitors for whom Festival Roadraces used to be held along the Canal prior to be big race being established.

Competitors are asked to check in as early as possible to facilitate the chip timing. Refreshments and prizes at the Sports Hall around 9.00.
