There was some exciting competition at the Leitrim Primary Schools Sports Hall Athletics Finals organized by Leitrim Sports Partnership and Leitrim AAI Board in Ballinamore Sports Hall on Friday last.
Nine schools contested this final session with Gael Scoil Liathroma, Four Master Kinlough and Ballinamore Girls NS coming out on top.
The large Gaelscoil squad contested all four events and emerged winners in the two Junior competitions. In the 3rd/4th Class Boys’ competition the Carrick on Shannon school won 11 of the 12 events and had over 50 points to spare over St Manchan’s who finished second. They had a good margin to spare also in the 3rd/4th Class Girls event with St Patrick’s Drumshanbo in second position.
Four Masters Kinlough made the long journey to Ballinamore but it was worthwhile with their 5th/6th class Boys team having five points to spare over the Gael Scoil. Their 5th/6th Class Girls team which had also qualified from the Manorhamilton semi final were edged out by just one point in a titanic struggle with SN Bhride Naofa of Ballinamore.
The four winning schools compete this Thursday (14th) in the Regional semi final at Sligo Sports Complex where the opposition will come from Donegal, Galway and Roscommon. Two of the four teams from each of the three Regions will contest the Final in Athlone IT on Friday March 23.
