Gerard O’Donnell looks as if he will be packing his bags for Prague after the Carrick AC athlete achieved the qualifying time for this year’s European Indoor Championships.

Gerard O’Donnell looks as if he will be packing his bags for Prague after the Carrick AC athlete achieved the qualifying time for this year’s European Indoor Championships.

O’Donnell scorched to a new personal best of 7.73 seconds at the IFAM meeting in Ghent on Saturday, going well under the qualifying mark of 7.78 seconds.

Gerard becomes the first Carrick AC athlete to achieve the Qualification standard for a major Senior Championships and follows in the footsteps of some distinguished Leitrim athletes.

The list includes P.J. Leddy who ran in the International Cross Country Championship 1968 & 1969, his brother Eddie who competed at the 1972 & 1976 Olympics, Patricia Griffin Europa Cup 1977 and numerous World Cross-country and Road Championships, Colin Griffin 2008 & 2012 Olympic Games, Laura Reynolds 2012 Olympic Games and American born Brian McGovern 2011 and 2013 European First League.
