There were some very good performances but no medals for Leitrim athletes when the fiftieth anniversary AVIVA Connacht Schools Cross Country Championships were held in the grounds of St Mary’s College, Galway, on Tuesday last.

The individual performance nearest to winning a medal came in the Junior Boys race where the ever improving David Bruen of Carrick-on-Shannon Community School came in fourth behind Liam Crowe of Sligo Grammar School, Cian McBride of Summerhill and Noel McIntyre of Portumna Community School.

Having raced hard in very difficult underfoot conditions as a member of the Irish Team at the Celtic International in ALSAA forty eight hours earlier, Daire Farrell found the latter stages of the Intermediate Boys event particularly tough and when Westport rival Con Doherty put on the pressure entering the final quarter he was unable to respond.

Doherty’s team mate David Harper finished second with Jimmy MeGeough of Sligo Grammer School third as Daire came in fifth.
